Initially known for drawings on The New York Times Op-Ed page and numerous books, he went on to work with Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Met Opera, Holocaust museums, and Jewish landmarks.

Podwal’s art has been acquired by more than eighty institutions worldwide, his papers are held at Columbia University, and the estate is managed by his sons.
